Caerphilly Children's Centre aims to provide high quality Medical, Therapy, Play and Support Services to families when they first discover their child has a disability and to support them as their child grows into adult life.

Services available:

  • Assessment Nursery Qualified and experienced nursery nurses work in partnership with other therapists and services to assess children with a learning or physical disability. While children attend the nursery, parents benefit from the Parent Support Group.
  • Blackwood Resource Centre The Centre offers residential respite and provides a range of services which enhances, encourages and helps young people, aged from birth to 18 years, who have a variety of disabilities to reach their 'maximum potential'.
  • Shared Care Services:
    • Home Sitting Service - enables parents to spend time on their own, or quality time with their other children, whilst professionals are minding their child who may have complex needs.
    • Outreach Service -supports children with disabilities to access local and community facilities. The aim is integration, and development of social skills as well as the development of independence from their families.
    • Family Link Scheme - Families with disabled children under the age of 18 are linked to a Link Family who live close by - for short periods each month.
  • Occupational Therapy The objective of an OT is to work with the child to maximise his/her abilities and independence in all aspects of daily living, including self-care, play, school skills and social activities.
  • Physiotherapy for Children Mainly through physical activities such as exercise and movement, physiotherapists aim to teach parents/carers the necessary skills to improve a child's independence and provide ongoing support. They aim to see children in the most suitable environment to their needs.
  • Social Services Community Occupational Therapist The OT will visit the family in their own home, community or respite - assess the child's and family's needs and disccuss ways to overcome practical problems to encourage independence. This can be by provision of specialist equipment, different moving and handling techniques or recommendation of adaptations to the home, to encourage independece or assist carers.
  • Child Development Advisory Service (Portage) Portage Home Teaching Scheme is intended for pre-school children with learning difficulties or development delay. The idea is to build on things that the child can do!
  • Information and Advice /Sure Start This service works with children 0-10 years of age. Support is offered to parents during the first few months in coming to terms with their changed circumstances to enable them to offer appropriate care for their child in the early years. They are then referred to other agencies and services for specific help.
  • Care Co-ordinator and Specialist Health Visitor Team - The 3C's This Team assists a family to co-ordinate the care for their child and gain the most from the services offered by the other Professionals. The aim is to reduce the stress experienced by families.
  • Specialist Paediatric Dietetic Service A Paediatric Dietitian provides specialist nutrition and dietetic advice for children with complex special health needs with the aim to optimise health, growth and development. This advice will be tailored to the individual child's needs.
  • Speech and Language Therapist The Speech and Language Therapist works with children who have severe and complex communication difficulties and also children with feeding/ swallowing problems.
  • Crescent Project /Contact Centre There are two branches of this Project: 1. provides a venue where children can meet with estranged parents in a safe, neutral and friendly environment; 2. provides 1-1 support for children with disabilities who wish to access groups, clubs and activities which run from the local Wesley Methodist Church.
  • Children with Disabilities Index A database of children living in Caerphilly Borough who have a special need or disability, to be used throughout the Borough by all agencies for planning future services. It adheres to the requirements of the Children Act 1989. Also an information point for families via regular newsletters, organised events and training.

    Who can refer a child/young person?

    Any parent or a professional involved with a child in the Caerphilly Borough may refer to any service at the Centre except Shared Chare Services. The Child Development Team will then decide if it is appropriate to offer the child a service or refer on. Referrals to the Shared Care Services must come via Caerphilly Social Services.

    All professionals work within current legislation in line with Data Protection Act 1998.
